Retirement Planning: An Open Letter to the Largemouth Bass in Lake Anna

Dear Friends Large and Small,

I wanted to give you a heads up that it looks like I may not be coming to visit like I had planned when I bought the little cottage on the water in 2005. Turns out that my game plan got a little tangled up as my 401K has taken a major strike and I’ve pretty much lost most of it, hook, line and sinker! Of course, the good news is that my broker/advisor says we’re only down 10% this year and if this positive news continues, I could be back on track to retire in about ten more years! How exciting is that? Of course, his fees are still the same and I noticed his big, fancy office downtown got new carpet installed last time I was there. Wow, what’s wrong with this picture?

Oh well, I guess I’m not the only one who worked 30 years giving their heart and soul to the company on the hope that when the time came to retire my 401K was there to care of me. How naïve’ was I to believe that pipe dream? If I had it to do over, I would have rather invested it myself in things of my own choosing. How much worse could I have done and what if I actually had done much better? Where would I be today? Good question, eh? Anyway, in closing, please stay healthy and grow big and strong because I plan to be there someday with my fishing rod in hand and the shiniest lures you’ve ever tasted! See you then!
